Old Legs Tour Angola 2024 – The Support Crew
20 July to 20 August 2024
Months before the first pedal stroke, preparations begin. As we gear up to go #EvenMoreEpic with OLT Angola 2024, we take a moment to acknowledge the unsung heroes, the true Power Behind The Pedals of every Old Legs Tour: The Support Crew
4 sleeps to go!
Every grand performance tells a captivating story, but the magic on stage unfolds against a backdrop of unseen efforts.
With any great production, there is always so much more to it than the public sees, and so often the real heroes of the story are those frantically working backstage, so that when the show starts, everything is perfect, and appears effortless.
The reality, of course, is that the curtain wouldn’t even be raised without someone raising it, the play wouldn’t exist without someone writing it, the costumes wouldn’t be worn without someone designing and making them. And so it is with any Old Legs Tour.
Months before the first pedal stroke, preparations begin. Each iteration of the tour becomes a well-rehearsed act, fuelled by lessons learned and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Spreadsheets and Gantt charts transform into detailed scripts, and the intrepid Old Legs are given their marching orders (which some of us try hard to ignore, but usually end up following, because, let’s face it, when you’re facing 3,000km of cycling, and someone else is in charge of your food security, it’s generally considered the more practical option.)
These are the unsung heroes behind the blogs and videos and photos. The ones you don’t see.
The ones who prepare the frozen meals and the menu long before the show even gets on the road. The ones who wash up, do the (endless) laundry, make sure every meal is exactly where the cyclists are exactly when it’s supposed to be.
The ones who tidy up and sweep the camp long after the last weary cyclist has gone to bed, the ones who are up way before the first cyclist surfaces to boil water, prepare tea, organise ride snacks and breakfast.
The ones who drive behind the Old Legs, trailing camp equipment, food, supplies and the occasional cyclist who can’t ride that day. The ones who choregraph a perfectly-timed bunny-hop to get ahead of the cyclists just in time to unpack, set up and serve a delicious meal-on-the-go, then pack it all up again and set out once more.
The Tour simply couldn’t happen without our Support Crew. Or perhaps it could. But we’d have to be renamed The Hungry Tired Dirty and Grumpy Old Legs, and we’d probably only make it as far as Nyabira.
Join us this Saturday 20th July for the Big Send Off, 6 am at Isuzu Autoworld, Harare Drive, Pomona as we go #EvenMoreEpic
