Old Legs Tour Angola 2024 – Day One

Harare to Montgomery - 83km of Chaos, Camaraderie, and Cycling.

Here we go folks, day one of our epic 3500km pedal-powered pilgrimage from Harare to Angola.

We did it! We finally set off on our epic 3500km adventure from Harare to Angola, and what a day it was!  Buckle up for a tale of Chaos, Camaraderie, and Cycling.

The excitement was palpable as we gathered at Isuzu’s new spot on Harare Drive, surrounded by a flurry of media,  a symphony of Harare honks, and cheers from our well-wishers.

But, as we soon discovered, our journey wouldn’t be without its hiccups. The car carrying our bikes got lost en route to the starting point, causing a brief panic. Driven by the Aussies, we question how on earth they are going to find their way to Angola.

Thankfully, a reunion was swift, and with an awesome escort of the Motorbike Club and an ambulance clearing the way, we (and so many other cyclists who joined us on the first section, thanks mates!) were soon cruising like the cycling cavalcade!  What a treat it was not to have to dodge cars on Harare Drive and Golden Stairs.

The real adventure began once we hit the open road. Mazoe was a cacophony of chaos – buses, cars, pedestrians, and vendors vying for space. Our support team expertly shielded us from the mayhem, and we breathed a collective sigh of relief as we turned onto the quieter road towards Concession.

After a delicious breakfast stop, where we were treated to a build-a-bagel meal, we bid farewell to our guest riders and support crew, embarking on the next leg of our journey. Little did we know, the real challenge lay ahead. The rocky, hilly, sandy terrain tested our resolve (and our bikes), and we soon realized that only two of us had downloaded the crucial track, despite Laurie warning us repeatedly to download it! Whoops!

Aungus and Adam took turns in taking the lead and bringing up the rear, expertly herding us through the thick bush. We encountered a hairy section of rocky terrain, which defeated even the bravest among us (sorry, Adam!). But the subsequent downhill stretch was pure exhilaration – wind in our hair, sun on our faces, and a sense of freedom we just loved.

Until, that is, Gus took a tumble. Gus managed to save his head but not his bum, which has become the talk of the town (and his blog!). Arnica and ice are now his best friends.

As we limped towards the finish line, the last 20km felt like an eternity. But the stunning scenery and the promise of a cold beer kept our pedals turning. And what a welcome awaited us! A breathtaking dam, a surprise air show courtesy of Raymond and Mike (thanks, guys!),and the warm glow of accomplishment.

Day one, you were a wild ride. Bring on day two!

But the wheels don’t just turn for us. While these tours put us (literally) on the map, it’s not just about the cyclists or the ride itself. It’s about why we do it, and how it helps. We Pedal For Pensioners, and every cent raised goes directly towards supporting Zimbabwe’s elderly through the Old Legs Trust.   All the sponsorship and donations go towards making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.  40% of the funds are spent on welfare and chronic medications, and 60% on medical treatment.

Today, we’d like to share a remarkable story of kindness and community spirit. Earlier this year, Mrs. ND, a beneficiary of the Distressed Pensioner Fund, reached out to us about a dire situation at her retirement complex. One of the residents, Mr. JS, was struggling with advanced Alzheimer’s, and his wife, was shouldering the caregiving responsibilities alone.

Tragically, Mr. JS developed a severe pressure sore on his heel that turned septic and black. Despite the local doctor’s best efforts, Mr. JS required urgent surgical attention in Harare. However, the cost of treatment was prohibitively expensive, and the couple was unable to afford it.

That’s when Mrs. ND and her fellow community members sprang into action. Despite being pensioners themselves, they rallied together to raise funds for Mr. JS’s surgery. we were touched by their selflessness and promised to support their efforts through the Old Legs Tour Trust.

Within 24 hours, the community had raised the hospital fees, and we were able to cover the surgeon’s fees. Thanks to this incredible team effort, Mr. JS received the life-changing surgery he so desperately needed.

This story amazes us because it highlights the kindness of those who have so little. These pensioners, who are often struggling themselves, came together to support one of their own in a time of crisis. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope and always kindness to be found.

Have Fun, Do Good, Do Epic!

Cheers for now from The (mostly) Old Legs!
